How to Take Your Own Photos
I know you are missing out on having these moments documented during the pandemic. Your kids don't stop growing because of everything going on. Life doesn't pause and you won't get these moments back. I see you!
Since you aren't able to hire your favorite photographer during this time, I've put together some helpful tips. These moments won't pass you by. These tips will work with any camera you have hanging around. Even your phone!
1. My biggest tip is to not stress! Seriously. Have fun with it.
2. Plan your wardrobe. You can grab my Style Guide by joining my newsletter below.
3. I highly suggest not posing and just going with the flow. This way you'll capture honest emotions and there won't be as much pressure.
4. Don't say "cheese". Please, just don't. You can prompt them with something like "who has the stinkiest feet" or basically anything with the word "fart" in it and you're sure to get some honest laughs. The only thing stiff should be your drink. ;-)
5. Natural light. I'll say it louder for those in the back. NATURAL LIGHT. Make sure there aren't any lights on.
6. Choose a setting. I usually suggest the master bedroom with everyone snuggled up on your bed or the living room. Push all the crap to the side and pretend it's not even there.
7. Embrace the imperfection. Capture your family exactly as you are.
And a little bonus for those giving birth that can't currently have a photographer there with you.
Bonus: Fresh 48
1. If you get nothing else from this list, PLEASE just make sure every light is off in the room (especially if you're having a hospital birth...those lights aren't your friend).
2. Windows are magical. Get as close as you can to the window and pull up the blinds.
3. Angles. You can capture the exact same moment from different angles for some variety. Also, do NOT point the camera so you can see up your baby's nose. You'll thank me.
4. What do you want to remember most about this time? Maybe even jot down a little list, so you don't forget. I'm personally obsessed with umbilical cords. Fresh babies also have wonderfully wrinkly skin. Hands and feet. Eye lashes. Nursing! Everyone cuddled up on the bed.
5. Wear anything comfy. This is not the best time to get all dressed up. Purchasing your own hospital gown has become very popular. I would check Amazon or Etsy for something cute. Swaddles are also great and they even sell them with matching hats.
During COVID-19, I am offering guided sessions for $75. We will schedule a FaceTime session and I will guide you through the entire process. Then, you'll send me 5-10 images and I'll edit them for you. :-)
